Rat Rods To The Rich And Famous: 5 Auto Restoration Projects That Are Sky Rocketing In Value

Have you looked at what the 1989 Porsche 911 or BMW E30 M3 of the same year are going for? These cars were once the dreams of teenage boys, but then were forgotten about for decades. Just a few years ago you could have bought one of these cars for as little as you could for any other average restoration project. Today, the prices of many of these classic foreign and domestic classic cars have sky rocket, and now is the time for you to get in on the actions:

1. BMW M3 Models from the 1980s and 1990s to Present Day

The BMW M3 is a luxury sports coupe developed by the racing department of BMW. The first year that these cars were made was in 1985 and they continue to be made to day. The great thing about these cars is that they are very reliable and will last for decades with just routine maintenance like oil changes, tune ups and brake jobs. Different generations include the E30, E36, E46, E90 sedan, E92 Coupe, E93 Convertible and the most recent 2018 F80.

2. Porsches From Any Era for Luxury Restorations If You Get Lucky (Particularly the Porsche 911)

The Porsche 911 is an iconic car with a huge following that keeps on growing. This crowd consists of high rollers that shell out high-dollar for prized rare Porsche models, such as the 1974 Porsche 911 IROC that sports a 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine and sold for 2.3-million dollars back in 2016.  You may not be able to afford a 7-figure Porsche, but there are plenty of Porsche 911s out there weighting to be found and restored. These restored vehicles can be worth a 5-to-6-figure price tag, and some later '90s models selling for $400,000 or more.

3. Volkswagen Bugs, Buses or Karmann-Ghia From The '60s Through The '70s And Beyond

Volkswagen Bugs were once cars that some owners had trouble giving away, but that has changed. Today, Volkswagens have a strong and loyal following of owner/enthusiasts. The early model bugs are often restored back to their original condition, while others are customized into anything from low riders, dragsters or high-performance sports cars. Bugs may be the one of the most well-known Volkswagen models, but there are also the popular buses that can be restored into cruisers, daily drivers or campervans for road trips. Lastly, there is the Volkswagen Karmann-Ghia, which had a styling like that of the '50s Porsche Spyder and has the same air-cooled, rear-engine setup.

4. Chevrolet Corvair Cars Vans and Pickup Trucks for A Different Type of American Auto Restoration

This list would not be complete without a few American cars, and there are some that can compete with the European classics. The Chevrolet Corvair models from 1959 through 1969 have a lot to offer the interests of different groups of collectors. First, all the Corvair models have the same air-cooled platform as the Porsches and Volkswagens of the same era. In addition, they can appeal to the Volkswagen Bus crowd with the Van and Van-Truck body variants.  The Corvair Monza was a 2-door coupe that is often considered the affordable alternative to Porsche because it has the same rear air-cooled 6-cylinder engine designed and can be tuned to compete with these German cars.

5. American Luxury Sedans from The Late '60s And Early '70s (Buick, Cadillac, Pontiac, Oldsmobile and Mercury)

The final cars that you may want to look at are American luxury cars form the '60s and '70s. These have often been cars that have been forgotten about by enthusiasts but have gained popularity. Classic Buick Riviera's, Mercury Montego or the Cadillac El Dorado are large American luxury cars that are becoming rarer, growing popular in car collector circles and increasing in value.

These are some of the cars that you will want to invest in for restoration and keep for value appreciation to get a return on your investment. If you buy a German car like a BMW, contact a BMW engine oil service to help with getting the right fluids to complete your restoration. You can also talk with them about other foreign model projects, such as Porsche or Volkswagen models that you may need help with.

Creating Excellent Automotive Care After struggling for years with a terrible car, I knew that it wasn't going to last another season. It was beat up, worn out, and completely unreliable. Instead of giving up on the car, I decided to talk with a friend of mine who was really great with vehicles. We worked together to take care of things, and we even found some great prices on auto parts to take care of business. When we were finished, the car ran like new, and I was really impressed with the results.
